Facts for kids

Word for word as the game reads them aloud.

Woof!

Dogs bark to say hello, to play, or to tell you something. Different barks can mean different things.

Meow!

Cats meow to talk to people. Grown-up cats hardly ever meow at other cats.

Purr

Cats often purr when they feel calm and happy. It is a soft, low humming sound.

Whiskers

A cat's whiskers help it feel things that are close by. Never pull a cat's whiskers.

A super nose

A dog's nose is much better at smelling than ours. A dog can learn a lot just by sniffing.

Night eyes

Cats can see well when it is dim. Their night eyesight is much better than ours.

Hidden claws

A cat can pull its claws in. When it rests, you can hardly see them, and it can walk very quietly.

Puppies and kittens

A baby dog is a puppy. A baby cat is a kitten. When they are born, their eyes are still closed.

Sleepy cats

Cats sleep for many hours every day. They can sleep for most of the day.

Daily walks

Dogs need a walk every day. They run and sniff. It keeps them fit and happy.

A clean cat

Cats clean their fur with their tongue. A cat's tongue is rough, a bit like a tiny brush.

Old friends

Dogs and cats have lived with people for thousands of years.

Love and care

A pet needs food, fresh water, a cozy bed, playtime, visits to the vet and lots of love.

Questions kids ask

Why does a cat purr?

Most often because it feels calm and content. Look at the whole cat: a purr together with a relaxed body means a happy cat. A cat can also purr when it is worried or hurt.

Why does a cat meow?

To talk to people. Kittens meow to their mother, but grown-up cats hardly ever meow at other cats.

Does a wagging tail always mean a happy dog?

No. A loose, wide wag with a relaxed body means a happy dog. A tail held high with short, stiff wags usually means tension, and a stiff, low wag can mean fear.

What is a play bow?

A dog's way of asking for a game. When dogs start to play, they often begin with a play bow: front down, bottom up in the air.

How can I tell that a dog is scared?

It tucks its tail between its back legs, pins its ears back, leans away or makes itself small. Stay calm and give the dog space.

How can I tell that a cat is scared?

A scared cat is crouched and tense, with its tail pressed to its body, flat ears and wide pupils. It may hide. Let it stay in its hiding place and give it space.

What does it mean when a cat blinks slowly at me?

It is a friendly sign. You can blink slowly back, and turn your head a little to the side, to show that you are not a threat.

How good is a dog's nose?

Much better than ours. A dog has more than 100 million smell sensors in its nose, and people have about 6 million. Experts estimate that a dog smells things about 1,000 to 10,000 times better than we do.

How do cats see in the dark?

Cats see much better than people when it is dim, which helps them at dusk, at night and at dawn. Their whiskers also help them find their way through tight, dark spaces.

How much do cats sleep?

A lot. Cats sleep about 12 to 18 hours a day, in many short naps.

How often does a dog need a walk?

Most dogs need at least one or two walks a day. Walking keeps a dog fit and is good for its mind. Some dogs need more.

Why does a cat scratch?

Scratching is normal for cats. They stretch, play and mark their territory, and scratching wears off old outer claws so that sharper ones show. A sturdy, tall scratching post gives a cat the right place to do it.

Talk about it

  1. How do you think the dog or the cat feels right now, and what tells you so?
  2. What does a pet need every day to be healthy and happy?
  3. What should you do when you meet a dog you do not know?

Pet body language charades

Take turns acting like a pet without words: a sleepy curled-up cat, a dog doing a play bow, a cat with a high tail saying hello. The other person guesses how the pet feels. If you have a real pet, or meet a dog with its owner, look at its tail, ears and body together. Always ask the owner before you pet a dog.
