Shapes

Your child meets eight shapes, builds pictures with them, fits them into a shape sorter, finds them in a busy street, counts corners and sides, and turns flat shapes into 3D ones. Every word is read aloud, so no reading is needed.

Inside the game

Shapes

Tap a shape to hear its name, how it looks and three things that have that shape.

Build

Drag shapes into place to build a house, a boat, a rocket and a kite.

Sorter

Drag five shapes into the shape sorter, each into the hole that fits.

Find

Find five shapes in a busy street: a round clock, a triangle roof, a rectangle door and more.

Count

Tap every corner and then every side of a triangle, square, rectangle, diamond and hexagon. And a circle has none.

3D shapes

Meet the cube, ball, cone and cylinder, and find them in a dice, an orange, a party hat and a can.

Fun facts

Short facts about shapes in the world, from honeycombs to stop signs, read aloud.

Memory

Match each shape to a thing with that shape: 4, 6 or 8 pairs.

Quiz

Ten questions. Every right answer adds a shape to a tower.

Facts for kids

Word for word as the game reads them aloud.

Wheels are circles

Every part of a circle's edge is the same distance from the middle. That is why a wheel rolls so smoothly, without bumps.

Bees build hexagons

Bees make their honeycomb out of little cells with six sides. Hexagons fit together with no gaps between them.

Triangles are strong

A triangle does not wobble when you push on its corners. That is why you see triangles in bridges, cranes and roofs.

Bubbles are balls

A soap bubble is always a round ball. Round is the shape that holds the air with the smallest skin.

Stop signs have eight sides

A stop sign is an octagon: a shape with eight sides and eight corners. It is the only road sign with this shape.

The Earth is a ball

Our planet Earth is a giant ball. The moon and the sun are balls too. Their grown-up name is sphere.

Snowflakes have six arms

Every snowflake grows with six arms, like a hexagon. No two snowflakes look exactly the same.

A starfish is a star

Most starfish have five arms, like a star with five points. Some kinds have many more arms, even forty!

Pizza shapes

A whole pizza is a circle. Cut it, and every slice looks like a triangle.

Roll or stack?

A ball rolls away when you let it go. A cube stays where you put it, so you can stack cubes into a tower.

The heart shape

The heart shape means love. Your real heart, the one beating in your chest, looks more like a little pear.

A diamond is a rhombus

A diamond shape is a square standing on one corner. Its grown-up name is rhombus.

The moon changes shape

A full moon looks like a circle. A few days later, it looks like a thin curved slice. We call that a crescent.

Questions kids ask

What is the difference between a square and a rectangle?

Both have four sides and four corners. A square has four sides of the same length, while most rectangles have two long sides and two short ones, so a square is really a special rectangle.

Does a circle have corners?

No. A circle has no corners and no straight sides. It is one round line that goes all the way around.

Why are wheels round?

Every point on the edge of a circle is the same distance from the middle. So a round wheel rolls smoothly, without bumps.

Is an oval the same as a circle?

No. An oval is round too, but it is longer one way than the other, like an egg. A circle is equally wide in every direction.

What is a diamond shape?

A shape with four sides that are all the same length, like a square standing on one corner. Its grown-up name is rhombus.

Why do bees build hexagons?

Hexagons are shapes with six sides, and they fit together with no gaps in between. That way bees can store lots of honey using very little wax.

What shape is a stop sign?

An octagon, a shape with eight sides and eight corners. No other road sign has that shape, so drivers recognize it right away.

Why do snowflakes have six arms?

When water freezes into ice, it always builds a six-sided pattern. Each snowflake grows its six arms on the way down, and no two look exactly alike.

Why are there triangles in bridges and roofs?

A triangle keeps its shape when you push on it. A square can be pushed out of shape, but a triangle stays stiff and strong.

What is the difference between a flat shape and a 3D shape?

A flat shape, like a square, can be drawn on paper. A 3D shape, like a cube, can be held in your hand: a cube is made of six squares.

Why does a ball roll but a cube does not?

A ball is round all over, so it rolls every way you push it. A cube has flat sides, so it stays put, and you can stack cubes into a tower.

When do children learn shapes?

Many 4-year-olds are learning to name simple shapes like circles, squares and triangles, and to count their sides and corners. Every child learns at their own pace.

Talk about it

  1. What shapes can you see in this room right now?
  2. Which shape do you like best, and how many corners does it have?
  3. If you built a house from shapes, which shape would you use for the roof?
Try at home

A shape hunt at home

Pick a shape together, like a circle, and find as many things with that shape as you can: plates, clocks, buttons. Count the corners of each thing you find. Next time, look for squares or rectangles.
