How we teach

Every Play & Learn game follows the same simple ideas from early-years teaching.

Start from what children love

Young children learn best when they care about the topic. That is why our games start from the questions children really ask: about sharks, dinosaurs, letters, numbers and feelings.

One topic, many ways in

Each game looks at one topic from several sides: touching and exploring, comparing sizes, a short story, a memory game and a quiz. Repeating an idea in different ways helps it stick.

Read aloud, so no reading is needed

Every word is spoken in a natural voice, in English, German, Dutch, French or Spanish. Children who cannot read yet can play on their own, and children who can read hear and see the words together.

Short sessions

A game takes about ten minutes. That is long enough to learn something and short enough to stop happily.

Learning beyond the screen

Every game has a page for grown-ups with the facts, the questions children ask, three questions to talk about together and one activity for at home. The conversation afterwards is where much of the learning happens.

Facts we check

Every fact is checked against reputable sources, such as natural history museums and science agencies. Each topic page lists its sources and the date it was last checked.
