Inside the game
Ten and
The first frame is full: that is ten. Drag acorns into the second frame to make a number from 11 to 20.
Hop
Walk the hedgehog along the stones from 10 to 20: to a number, one more, one less, or counting by twos.
Count
Tap and count 11 to 20 apples, pears or acorns, laid out in rows of ten.
Frames
Draw a line from each of four numbers to the frames with that many counters.
Order
Five stones in a row with two numbers missing. Drag the right numbers into the gaps.
Book
A number book from 11 to 20: a soccer team, a dozen eggs, two weeks, and how hedgehogs live.
Memory
Find pairs of a number and a card with that many counters: 4, 6 or 8 pairs.
Quiz
Ten questions. Every right answer is a leaf for the hedgehog's nest, and with eight the hedgehog sleeps all winter.
Facts for kids
Word for word as the game reads them aloud.
Eleven
Eleven is ten and one more. A soccer team has eleven players.
Twelve
Twelve is ten and two. Twelve is also called a dozen: eggs often come in a box of twelve.
Thirteen
Thirteen is ten and three. Count all ten fingers, then three toes: thirteen!
Fourteen
Fourteen is ten and four. Two weeks have fourteen days.
Fifteen
Fifteen is ten and five. A full frame and half of a frame.
Sixteen
Sixteen is ten and six. Two rows of eight apples make sixteen apples.
Seventeen
Seventeen is ten and seven. Share seventeen acorns between two hedgehogs, and one acorn is left over!
Eighteen
Eighteen is ten and eight. In many countries you are a grown-up when you turn eighteen.
Nineteen
Nineteen is ten and nine. One more, and you reach twenty!
Twenty
Twenty is two tens! Ten fingers and ten toes make twenty.
Ten and more
Eleven to nineteen are the numbers between ten and twenty. Every one of them is ten and a little more.
Counting by twos
Two, four, six, eight, ten, twelve, fourteen, sixteen, eighteen, twenty. That is counting by twos: you skip every other number!
Prickly ball
A hedgehog has thousands of spines on its back. When it is scared, it rolls into a prickly ball.
Winter nest
In autumn the hedgehog gathers a big pile of leaves. It sleeps in that nest all winter long.
Questions kids ask
Why does the game say fourteen is ten and four?
Every number from 11 to 19 is one ten and some ones: 14 is 10 and 4 more. Seeing this is a kindergarten goal, and it is the first step toward understanding tens and ones.
Why are eleven and twelve so tricky?
Their names do not sound like ten and one or ten and two, so children cannot hear the ten in them. From thirteen on, the teen at the end is a hint that there is a ten inside.
Why is sixteen written with a 1 first?
The 1 stands for one full ten and the 6 for six more. In the word sixteen you hear the six first, so some children write 61. That is a common mistake and it fades with practice.
What is a ten frame?
A ten frame is a box with two rows of five spaces. When it is full, there are ten, so children can see a ten without counting again. The game uses two frames to show numbers up to 20.
What does counting on mean?
Counting on means starting from a number you already know instead of from one. When the first frame shows ten, your child can say eleven, twelve, thirteen for the next counters.
How far do children count in kindergarten?
In the United States, kindergarten standards ask children to count to 100 by ones and by tens. They also count up to 20 things and write the numbers from 0 to 20.
Why are the apples in rows of ten?
Twenty things in a line or neat rows are much easier to count than twenty in a jumble. The first row lights up when it is full, so your child sees that ten fit in one row.
What are one more and one less?
One more is the next number when you count, and one less is the number just before. On the number line in the game, that is one stone forward or one stone back.
What is counting by twos?
You skip every other number: two, four, six and on to twenty. The hedgehog jumps over a stone each time, so children see the pattern and hear it.
Is it OK to count on fingers past ten?
Yes. A long-term study found that young children who counted on their fingers did better at adding later, and children stop using their fingers on their own when they no longer need them. Ten fingers and a few toes make a fine teen number.
How can we practice counting to 20 at home?
Count stairs, steps or cars, and keep going past ten. Show ten with both hands, then add toes or objects to make teen numbers, saying "ten and three makes thirteen".
Talk about it
- Show me ten with your fingers. How can we make twelve?
- Which number comes just after fifteen? And just before?
- If we count our toes and fingers together, how many do we get?
Make a ten frame
Draw two rows of five boxes on paper and put a button or a piece of pasta in each box: that is ten. Put a few more next to it and ask how many there are now. Count on together from ten.
